Crushed Cars is broken-down cars in the most glorious way. Blomkwist, fascinated with destruction and waste, teamed up with colleague photographer Hicham Louazna for this project on slow consumption. The two picked ready-for-the-junkyard Mercedes cars and shot them right before they would be completely wiped off the face of the earth.
It’s difficult to picture the vehicles for what they once were; highly valued objects both in market price and emotional value. A sharp contrast with the cripple and crinkled shapes depicted. Blomkwist and Louazna show the cars as if floating in a vacuum, ripped from context, nothing to find comfort or distraction from the inevitable. It’s bold and unforgiving, wrapped in an eye-pleasingly attractive composition. Clean, perfected portraits of the discarded.
